چکیده

Humans can perceive a variety of visual properties of objects besides their category. In this paper, we explorewhether convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can also learn object-related variables. The models are trained for object position, size and pose, respectively, from synthetic images and tested on unseen held-out objects. First, we show that some object properties come "for free" from learning others, and poseoptimized model can generalize to both categorical and non-categorical variables. Second, we demonstrate that pre-training the model with pose facilitates learning object categories from both synthetic and realistic images. Thesis Supervisor: James J. Basic Level Categorization Facilitates Visual Object Recognition

Recent advances in deep learning have led to significant progress in the computer vision field, especially for visual object recognition tasks. The features useful for object classification are learned by feed-forward deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) automatically, and they are shown to be able to predict and decode neural representations in the ventral visual pathway of humans and mon...

Differences in perceptual learning transfer as a function of training task.

A growing body of research--including results from behavioral psychology, human structural and functional imaging, single-cell recordings in nonhuman primates, and computational modeling--suggests that perceptual learning effects are best understood as a change in the ability of higher-level integration or association areas to read out sensory information in the service of particular decisions....

Discriminative Object Categorization with External Semantic Knowledge

Visual object category recognition is one of the most challenging problems in computer vision. While effortless for humans, it is inherently difficult for machines because of the visual variations such as lighting, pose, clutter and occlusion. Even assuming that we can obtain perfect instance-level visual representations, the object category recognition problem still remains difficult for machi...
